Dear |
|
| |
|
The kids are back to school and the fall season is fast approaching. It’s hard to
believe that summer is almost over. This
issue of Friends has some important
announcements including the release of a
delicious new wine. Don’t miss out on this
one – if you’re a Chardonnay fan this is as
good as it gets! We are excited about this
year’s harvest – even with all the cool
weather over the summer. All in all, things
are shaping up to be very busy and
compressed over the coming months. We look
forward to seeing you around the winery –
things are really starting to buzz as we
gear up for the 2010 Harvest.
Cheers! |

Bike MS - Waves to Wine Ride 2010 |
 |
|
|
|
|
For the fifth
straight year, we are a proud
sponsor of the Bike MS Waves to Wine
Ride. Multiple Sclerosis touches the
lives of millions of Americans every
year and our family is no
different. As the official wine of
the race, we will be pouring Dry
Creek on both Saturday and Sunday.
The winery will also be a rest stop
as the riders complete the race at
Lake Sonoma.
|
|
The experience is
unforgettable for the riders during
their two-day journey from San
Francisco up Highway 1 to
Healdsburg. More than 2,000 riders
commit themselves to helping move
closer toward a world free of MS.
Riders raise thousands of dollars,
all of which is donated back to help
fund critical research.
The race will be held
on Saturday, September 25 and
Sunday, September 26, 2010. If you
happen to be in wine country that
weekend, be sure to watch the road
for bikers! |

Employee Garden |
 |
|
|
|
|
Our employee garden has become a real source of
pride and purpose for those of us who work at the
winery. It all got started last year when Jerry
Smith, our Cellarmaster, suggested we plant some
vegetables on a slice of fallow ground behind the
winery. After getting the okay, a few hearty
souls planted a small, but well oriented vegetable garden. As word spread around the winery, more |

employees
got involved. Everyone had a great
time and bonded over the incredible harvest.
This year, the garden really took off. Row
after row of numerous versions of
tomatillos, tomatoes, squash, beans,
zucchini, pumpkin and so on were planted.
This summer’s harvest (even with the cool
weather) has been incredibly bountiful.
In many ways, the garden has reminded us
about our connection to the land and how
interconnected we all truly are. As this
harvest ends, we are already looking forward
to planting our winter garden!

Harvest Update |
 |
|
|
|
|
There are several adjectives we could use to
describe the summer growing season this
year, however, it really boils down to just
one word – COLD! While the rest of the
country baked in the summer heat, Northern
California wine country languished in summer
gloom. In fact, the month of July was our
coldest July in more than 40 years! The
obvious question is – how is this going
to affect the grapes at harvest?
For starters, the cool, damp
weather has certainly created a concern in
the vineyard in terms of mold and bunch
rot. Fortunately, we have been able to
escape any serious issues on that end.
Secondly, this year’s harvest is being
pushed back by up to a month due to those
cool temperatures. And, while we’re excited
for the extended hang time and slow ripening
process, if early rains come in the fall it
could create some serious problems. One
thing is clear – the 2010 Harvest is going
to come fast and furious. We could have
Sauvignon Blanc arriving at the winery the
same time we get Zinfandel! It’s going to
be a serious challenge to shuffle all those
grapes around the winery but if anyone is up
to it, it’s our stellar cellar crew. |

Premier: 2008 Foggy Oaks
Chardonnay |
 |
|
|
|
We are thrilled to announce
the release of our newest
wine – 2008 Foggy Oaks
Chardonnay. For those of
you familiar with our
Russian River Valley
Chardonnay, this new wine is
another step in what has
been an exciting
transformation of our
Chardonnay program.
In 1999, we purchased
a spectacular
plot of land
in the Russian River
Valley. Framed by
several |
|
incredible old California oak trees, we envisioned a new era for Chardonnay at Dry Creek Vineyard. Over several years, we invested countless hours and research into what types of clones and rootstock would work best on the property. Then in 2003, we hired winemaker Bill Knuttel to help guide this new property into the
future along
with
helping us
revamp and retool our cellar
– all in an effort to make
world-class Chardonnay. |
|
 |
|
The culmination of this effort is now resting
comfortably in the 2008
Foggy Oaks Chardonnay
bottling. Beautifully
balanced, with ripe pear,
banana and peach flavors,
this elegant wine straddles
the line between wonderfully
ripe fruit and seamless
acidity. Foggy Oaks
Chardonnay is a family dream
realized and we could not be
happier with the result.

Grilled Tomatillo Salsa |
  |
|
|
|
|
As summer winds down and we
relish our final days on the
patio enjoying food and
wine, this salsa paired with
our 2009 Chenin Blanc is the
perfect fare. The salsa can be used simply
as a dip with tortilla chips
or over grilled chicken or
pork -- a great recipe for the
long Labor Day weekend!
