September 2006

Harvest is upon us! As the calendar rolls into September, another bountiful harvest is about to begin. This summer brought us relatively moderate temperatures with only one extreme heat spike in late July. Even with the heavy winter rains we experienced, this year’s crop looks extremely promising. So far we’ve seen smaller berry clusters, probably due to the heat in July.  Therefore, we’ll see more intense flavors and concentration from this year's crop. Stay tuned.

It’s an exciting time at the winery and a great time to visit. Join us everyday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to witness the harvest!

Please read on for more and if you wish to not receive future emails from us you may unsubscribe at the bottom of this email (although, we sincerely hope that’s not the case!).

We’ve teamed with our neighbor, Passalacqua Winery, to host a fun and educational event, Harvest Uncorked! Set for Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., it’s perfect for locals or wine country guests curious about what wineries really do during harvest.

Both wineries will unveil the mysteries of grape growing and winemaking in a fun and interactive setting. There will be grape juice samples, a barrel making station, a grape leaf identification table, and vineyard tours which will include learning how to measure brix in the vineyard.

The $15 admission includes a keepsake logo glass and entry to both Passalacqua and Dry Creek Vineyard. Be sure to mark your calendar!

Old Vine Zinfandel is, in a word, OLD! With vines averaging more than 80 years in age, our Old Vine Zinfandel is comprised of five unique vineyards around Sonoma County. Each site contributes distinct flavors and characteristics to the overall blend, creating a balanced wine with incredible depth and richness. As you are probably aware, Old Vine Zinfandel is not going to be around forever. Old Vine vineyards are a dying breed in Sonoma County. Given the limited production of this wine, we recommend stocking your cellars now for all of your holiday celebrations! Try it with our featured recipe: Wild Mushroom Bisque (click "Featured Recipes"at top).

We just received word that Wine Enthusiast has given our 2003 Old Vine Zinfandel a 93 Point rating, and picked as "Editor's Choice." This review will appear in the November 15th issue, on newsstands in October.

2003 Old Vine Zinfandel
Dry Creek Valley

"Over the years, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Zinfandel. Loved it until about the mid-1980s, back when many of the best Zins were lean and concentrated. Hated the super-ripe, exaggerated fruit versions that many people exalted in the 1990’s. Here again in this offering from Dry Creek is a Zinfandel that I love–and maybe one that those who enjoy extreme Zin can love, too…"

More than one guest has asked us the question, "Why do you put sailboats on your labels? Especially since you’re Dry Creek Vineyard, how are you supposed to sail on a dry creek?"  It’s a good question, and one we feel obligated to answer.

Our family is originally from Boston, an area rich in history and known for, among other things,  sailing.  We grew up on the water, learning to sail  at summer  camps  up  and down  the  East Coast.  When  Dave  moved

the family to California to start  Dry Creek Vineyard, that passion carried over onto  San

Francisco Bay. During weekends, we could be found sailing the cold bay waters,  enjoying many a glass of Dry Creek Vineyard wines. During one such outing, we were discussing some new packaging ideas. As the story goes, somewhere between the third and fourth bottle of wine, someone said, "Hey, we’re sailors, we love sailing, and are passionate about it. Why not tie our two passions together?" Kim commissioned local Sonoma County artist Michael Surles to paint the first sailing ship and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, our winery is synonymous with sailing. We are a sponsor of  US SAILING and support many regattas and

other sailing related events around the country. With our winery irrevocably tied to sailing, we’re proud that we can continue to support not only our winemaking passion, but our maritime roots as well.
