November 2007

Another harvest is safely behind us. Beginning in late August, we had a fast and furious start to the 2007 "crush" season. With record heat for almost two weeks, many varieties tried to ripen at once, causing near panic among growers to pick their fruit. However, Mother Nature came to the rescue, returning cool ocean breezes and foggy mornings to the Dry Creek Valley bringing most grapes back to a normal ripening pace.

The rest of harvest was relatively smooth with average crop sizes and most varieties showing excellent fruit flavors. The last little hiccup occurred right near the end of the season when we had an unusually rainy and cool weather pattern. As winemaker Bill Knuttel succinctly put it, "The whole season was really a Jekyll and Hyde type of harvest. We’re glad it’s over!"

Your opinion counts!  For 35 years, Dry Creek Vineyard’s flagship wine has been our Fumé Blanc. Founder David Stare first introduced the Sauvignon Blanc varietal to the Dry Creek Valley with the 1972 vintage. Inspired by the crisp and refreshing white wines of the Loire Valley in France, Dave adopted the term Fumé Blanc because of its reference to the Pouilly Fumés he so loved from that region.

Increasingly, we are concerned that our customers are confused over the concept of Fumé Blanc – unaware that it is in fact the Sauvignon Blanc varietal. Simply stated, Fumé Blanc is Sauvignon Blanc and has nothing to do with whether the wine is oaked or unoaked. Ours is not oaked.  Styles of Fumé Blanc vary widely which adds to the confusion.

History aside, we are wondering if a name change from Fumé Blanc to Sauvignon Blanc is something we should consider. Before any decision is made, we’d like to get your perspective. Please take a minute to complete our short survey. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Chenin Blanc Gravy

Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays. It is a time for family and friends to come together in the spirit of sharing great wine and food.

Most things about a family thanksgiving are traditional – from the cranberry sauce to the homemade pumpkin pie, everything is usually made from scratch. This also includes a wonderful gravy recipe that we have infused with our Chenin Blanc. The bright tropical flavors of the Chenin Blanc combine wonderfully with the savory gravy, giving it that something special – not to mention, our  Chenin Blanc, paired with the turkey and gravy is heavenly!  Click the "Featured Recipe" link to view and print the recipe. Enjoy!
