March 2007

March is an exciting time in the Dry Creek Valley.  This year, there will be not one, but two weekends, of barrel tasting (see below for more information).  In addition to the bevy of activity, the scenery in the valley has never been more beautiful.  Recent rains (and some warm temperatures) have caused the mustard flowers to bloom in full glory.   The backdrop is visually stunning – bright yellow mustard set against lush green grass and deep blue skies.  If you’re a photographer, or fan of unforgettable scenery, now is the time for a visit!

With Easter Sunday rapidly hopping (pun intended) toward us, it’s not too early to plan your special Easter dinner.  We recommend a honey glazed ham, oven roasted red potatoes, and a delicate spring salad to accompany our new release - 2005 Heritage Zinfandel. The combination of sweet honey, salty ham, rich potatoes, and delicate greens are an ideal match to our Heritage Zinfandel. With ripe, black cherry fruit and well-defined tannins that are balanced and elegant, this wine is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Buy Online

Did you know?

In 1972 there were three wineries in the Dry Creek Valley – in 2007 there are now 58 bonded and licensed wineries.

In 1972 the top wine grape variety in California was Carignane – in 2007 Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are king.

In 1972 the price for one acre of vineyard land in the Dry Creek Valley was approximately $2,500.   In 2007, that same acre would sell for $75,000.

In 1972 a bottle of Dry Creek Vineyard Fumé Blanc sold for $3.25.  Today, the 2005 vintage of Fumé Blanc sells for $14.50 per bottle.

In 1972 the American wine consumer knew very little about wine or varietals.  Wine was an afterthought.  In 2007, Americans 30 and over, both male and female, are consuming more wine than beer, according to a Gallup poll.  In fact, studies suggest that by 2008 the USA will be the number 1 wine consuming country in the world.

In 1972 Dry Creek Vineyard produced its first wines – Chenin Blanc, Fume Blanc, and Chardonnay – at Cuvaison Winery.  The doors to Dry Creek Vineyard did not officially open until 1973.

Dry Creek Vineyard is part of an illustrious class of wineries founded in 1972 including, Jordan Vineyard & Winery, Silver Oak Cellars, Stag’s Leap Winery, and Diamond Creek Vineyards.

Since 1972 Dry Creek Vineyard has remained family owned – in today’s consolidated wine industry, most wineries of our size are no longer family held.
