Dear
Friend: |
|
| |
|
|
|
Welcome to the unofficial
beginning of summer! Except, wait a minute
– with all the recent grey clouds and rain,
it looks more like January than June in wine
country. That’s right – Mother Nature is up
to her tricks again. After a mild and
relatively cool spring, the past week has
brought storm after storm from the
Pacific. All of this wet, cool weather is
certainly unwelcome news to our vineyard and
winemaking team. At this point, we should
be well into our growing season – now we are
several weeks behind. There’s no real
damage that’s being caused for now, although
looking ahead, it will certainly be another
late harvest season which causes winemakers
lots of sleepless nights and nail biting.
Eventually, warm weather will
arrive and we’ve got a great event scheduled
for later this month – Summer of Zin!
We’ve also
shared our thoughts regarding how to experience Dry Creek Vineyard including a
visit to our newly remodeled tasting room.
Finally,
enjoy the delicious summer recipe paired
with our new vintage of 2010 Fumé Blanc.
If you haven’t already done
so, please join us on Facebook and Twitter.
We’re using social media more
than ever to share up to the minute
information on latest
press, photos and other
exciting news. |

New Release - 2010 Fumé Blanc |
 |
|
|
|
It’s
not often we get to
reintroduce our
flagship wine.
Since 1972, we have
produced Fumé
Blanc. As the first
winery in Sonoma
County to do so
under this moniker,
we were also the
first winery to
plant Sauvignon
Blanc grapes in the
Dry Creek Valley.
For almost 40 years,
we have touted the
virtues of our
delicious, unoaked
Fumé Blanc. Dave
Stare even founded
the Society of
Blancs (SOB’s) to
help promote and
educate new world
wine drinkers on the
incredible
versatility of the
Sauvignon Blanc
variety.
With
the release of the
2010 vintage, we are
proud to introduce a
new package for Fumé
Blanc. Perhaps most
striking is the new
clear glass bottle –
a first for this
wine. Kim has done
an excellent job of
maintaining our
iconic sailing
imagery while also
incorporating some
modern touches and
sense of style. On
the back label, you
will notice a QR
code which scans to
a two-minute video
of Dave, Don and Kim
discussing the new
vintage. The QR
code is a terrific
technological
advancement, which
transports consumers
to the vineyard and
winery to hear
directly from the
family about the
wine. We’d love to
hear your feedback
and thoughts. Fumé
Blanc is at our very
heart and soul
reminding us of the
three key elements
that bind us
together – Family,
Heritage and
Authenticity.

How to Experience Dry Creek Vineyard
and Wine Country |
 |
|
|
|
|
For the newbie, heading to
wine country can be an overwhelming
experience. It doesn’t have to be. One of
many great reasons to visit Dry Creek
Vineyard is our lack of pretension about
wine. Our fun, knowledgeable and hospitable
tasting room staff stands at the ready to
make your wine country experience an
unforgettable one. And so, with all of our
combined years in wine country, it begged
the question – how would WE advise YOU on
how to experience Dry Creek Vineyard and
wine country?
We could wax poetic for weeks
about things to do in wine country but if
you’re just a day-tripper heading to DCV,
here are some suggestions that are sure to
make your day a memorable one:
|
|
Morning (8:00 – 10:30 a.m.)
Get an early start and head
to breakfast at Costeaux Bakery in downtown
Healdsburg. Enjoy a full breakfast, morning
coffee and (weather permitting) the super
outdoor ambiance of their patio.
After breakfast, walk the
town square (gotta digest those pancakes!)
and window shop as the town wakes up and
stores begin to open. This is a great time
to be on the square. Virtually no crowds
allow you to take a nice leisurely stroll.
|
|
 |
|
|
Afternoon (10:30 – 4:00 p.m.)
Head to the Dry Creek Valley
for a day of wine tasting. Right off the
bat, remember that your day should not be a
race to see how many wineries you can visit
in one day. Rather, we advise that you
select 3-5 wineries to visit for the day.
There are more than 70 wineries in the
valley, so there are plenty to choose from.
Of course, no stop is complete without
visiting Dry Creek Vineyard! To get the
most out of your experience: |
|
1. |
|
Come early and taste
before the crowds arrive.
|
|
2. |
|
Here’s an insider’s
tip – if you plan to stay in the
valley and have lunch, head to the
Dry Creek General store first thing
and purchase your sandwich and
picnic items. You’ll be glad you
did – wait times on the weekends for
a sandwich can be 45 minutes! |
|
3. |
|
Stay with us for
lunch. We have terrific picnic
grounds and a wonderful park like
setting. Kids are welcome too! |
|
4. |
|
Ask the staff about
our secret stash – there’s always
something yummy behind the bar that
is only for special occasions. |
|
5. |
|
Inquire about barrel
tastings. If it’s not too busy, we
are always more than happy to take a
group into our cellar for some more
private attention.
|
|
|
Evening
Most tasting rooms close by
4:30. Don’t let the fun end here. We
recommend heading back to Healdsburg to
experience more small town charm. There are
several restaurants to choose from – all
world class. Baci Café and Wine Bar is one
of our personal favorites – terrific food
and an excellent wine list. Also, through
the summer there are concerts on the plaza,
a farmer’s market and plenty of other
activities to see and do. The list of things
to experience is endless – why not make it a
weekend? |

Tasting Room Remodel |
 |
|
|
 |
|
It
has been more than
20 years since we
have made any
significant changes
to the design and
layout of our
tasting room. Added
in 1989, our tasting
room has always been
a convivial spot –
an area we have
gathered countless
times for meetings,
events and tastings
(lots of
tastings!).
Changing the look
after all these
years can be a bit
overwhelming, but
all of us Dry
Creekers felt it was
high time to change
things up and bring
in a few modern
touches.
For
starters, the entire
space received a
beautiful new paint
job. The tasting
room bar (the heart
and soul of the TR)
got a nice sanding
and dark stain.
Dave Stare’s famous
wood box collection
that is now our
countertop remains –
some things are just
too iconic to part
with. The lighting,
artwork,
countertops, sinks,
wine racks and more
have been either
replaced or updated
to reflect the new
look. The new techy
touch, free WiFi
access in the
Tasting Room and
picnic grounds
outside. It has been
quite a process to
get to this day and
we are really
excited to share the
space with our
friends and family.

This dish makes an excellent

healthy alternative.
