June 2007

Summer is in full gear at Dry Creek Vineyard. Our Summer Kick off party, held on Saturday, June 2, was a huge success. The afternoon was filled with the smooth sounds of Black Top Moon, along with barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers, and our delicious Fumé Blanc and Heritage Zinfandel. Many folks brought their picnic blankets and made an afternoon of it. We’re already looking forward to next year!

It’s a terrific time to be in the Dry Creek Valley and Healdsburg area. Summer concerts on the plaza in downtown Healdsburg (Tuesday nights), Saturday farmer's markets and other tastings, fairs, and auctions keep the entire summer alive with activity. Hopefully your wine country plans include a stop at Dry Creek Vineyard. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

It’s something to ponder - which white wine should I drink while enjoying an afternoon in the sun? For us, there’s no better choice than our 2005 Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley.

Rich, yet delicate and well balanced, this Chardonnay delivers all the elegance and sophistication of a Chardonnay at a much higher price point. At $20 per bottle, it is a true steal. We recommend serving our Chardonnay at about 60° - this brings out the wonderful character and charm of this delicious white wine.  Perfect to complement our Featured Recipe, Dry Creek Lime Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad.

Aah, the 4th of July. It’s one of our favorite times of year. Families and friends gather to celebrate – barbecues, swimming, picnicking, boating – it’s truly a great time of year.

Of course, the celebration would not be complete without a bottle, or two, or three…of delicious Dry Creek Vineyard wine. A well-chilled bottle of our Chenin Blanc or Fumé Blanc is a perfect choice for the afternoon.

After the sun goes down, enjoy the fireworks along with a bottle of our Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon. You really can’t go wrong!

We’ve heard it before - Wine, consumed in moderation, has positive health benefits. In a new study by the original "French Paradox," researcher Serge Renaud offers more evidence that moderate wine consumption is associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease and cancer among men.

Renaud and colleagues from the University of Bordeaux found that moderate wine consumption (2-3 glasses a day) was associated with a 30% reduction in the death rate from all causes; a 35% percent reduction in death rates from cardiovascular disease; and an 18-24% reduction in death rates from cancer.

The French Paradox, of 60 minutes fame, is the observation that, although the French and Americans have similar high fat diets, the French have a much lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. Speculation was that this is due to the protective effects of wine consumption, since the French drink much more wine than we do. Of course, there are many other possible explanations.

We for one don’t need any more explaining. Let’s grab a glass and drink to our health!
