July 2007

It’s not quite the dog days of summer, but it’s close. As hot weather settles in over much of wine country, the vines are bursting with full grape clusters. Veraison (the period at the beginning of berry ripening when the grapes change color) has not yet happened. As this process begins to unfold, the berries become soft and take on the color characteristics of their specific varieties. With more persistent hot weather in the forecast, harvest seems more and more imminent.

And, of course, hot weather can mean only one thing: white wine. And we’ve got two excellent ones to choose from. Both our Fumé Blanc and Chenin Blanc offer a perfect mix of refreshing citrus and steely mineral characters that are perfect for a warm afternoon. Read on for an excellent summertime offer on these two delicious wines!

Take advantage now of two of our most popular wines. At the recent Pacific Oyster Wine Competition, both the Chenin Blanc and Fumé Blanc were recognized in the Top 10 wines to pair with oysters. Along with shellfish, both wines go very well with spicy Thai dishes or pasta in a light crème sauce.  Be sure to try these wines with our  Featured Recipe, Shrimp and White Bean Salad with Creamy Lemon-Dill Dressing.

On June 2, we held a summer kick off bash that will not soon be forgotten. With the smooth sounds of Black Top Moon filling the air, guests enjoyed a relaxing afternoon on our picnic grounds. On the barbecue, we offered free hot dogs and hamburgers in addition to complimentary tastes of our Fumé Blanc and Heritage Zinfandel.

Many folks told us that they had attended our summer kick off party in years past, and it was the best event in the Dry Creek Valley! With the party on hiatus over the past few years, it’s apparent that people really missed our summer bash.

So with feedback in hand, we’re already planning next year! Don’t miss out. Mark your calendars for the first Saturday in June 2008!

The family at Dry Creek Vineyard takes seriously their commitment to protecting our environment. To that end, we have embarked on a rigorous program to ensure that we preserve our environment for future generations. It is called sustainable farming.

The essence of the sustainability movement rests on the principle that we must find new ways to satisfy our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

It encourages conscious participation by everyone at the winery to look for ways to preserve the biodiversity and natural ecosystem that surrounds our beautiful property. From using recycled materials for our shipping needs to farming our vineyards without pesticides, our desire is to leave the land to our children in better shape than that in which we found it.  Click here to read more . . .

Shrimp and White Bean Salad
with Creamy Lemon-Dill Dressing

A delicious summertime recipe that is a fabulous complement to our featured wines – 2005 Fumé Blanc or 2006 Chenin Blanc. Ready in just 32 minutes!  For a flavor variation, try arugula and basil in place of watercress and dill. You can also substitute chopped rotisserie chicken for shrimp.
